Pregnancy does not alter breast cancer survival
Until now it was believed the rush of oestrogen triggered by pregnancy would increase the risk of recurrence of breast cancer.
But new research findings presented at the European Breast Cancer Conference in Vienna this week, suggested pregnancy does not affect survival.
In a previous study, medical oncologist Dr Hatem Azim Jr and colleagues reviewed 14 trials showing it was safe for women with breast cancer to conceive, but it was unable to show whether this was the case for women with oestrogen receptor positive disease.
