Pregnancy weight linked to type 1 diabetes in offspring

The study, which looked at more than 1.2 million children in Sweden, found high first trimester maternal BMI was associated with a 33% increased risk of type 1 diabetes but only in parents who did not have diabetes.

The increasing incidence of type 1 diabetes in children with non-diabetic parents may partly be explained by increasing prevalence of maternal overweight/obesity, the authors, from Stockholm’s Karolinska Institutet, said.

The study confirmed a strong risk of type 1 diabetes among children of parents with diabetes, with those born to fathers with diabetes being about five times
