Probiotics may prevent colic

Giving newborns probiotics for the first months of their lives may stop them developing colic and other gastrointestinal problems, according to Italian researchers.

Published online yesterday in JAMA Pediatrics, their study randomised 554 newborns to either five drops of a solution containing Lactobcacillus reuteri or placebo daily over a three month period.

They found babies taking probiotics had an average duration of inconsolable crying of 38 minutes compared with almost double that for those on placebo.
