Probiotics prevent liver transplant infections

Liver transplant patients may be protected from post-operative infections if they consume probiotics, a study from WA suggests.

In a prospective study of 67 liver transplant recipients at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, the rate of infections (predominantly wound infections, UTI and peritonitis) was 8.8% (3/34 patients) in those who took probiotic capsules after transplantation compared to 30.3% (10/33 patients) in those who took placebo.

The probiotic group also had a shorter duration of antibiotic use
