Psychiatric bed shortage a ‘huge national problem’

A shortage of acute beds is jeopardising the treatment of psychiatric patients at high risk of suicide and aggression, two South Australian psychiatrists have warned.    

Writing in the MJA, Dr Stephen Allison and Dr Tarun Bastlampillai from Flinders University say there is a concern that Australia’s low psychiatric bed numbers increases the risk of worsening symptoms before acute admission.
