Psychiatrists push for clozapine for bipolar disorder

Clozapine should be considered as an option for treatment-refractory bipolar disorder because of its unique mood-stabilising and antisuicidal properties, say Australian psychiatrists.

The drug is currently PBS-listed only for treatment-resistant schizophrenia. But psychiatrists from Flinders University say its use in treatment-refractory bipolar disorder is backed by evidence from 15 clinical trials involving over 1000 patients.
