Psychosis an expensive disorder, survey shows
The second Australian National Survey of Psychosis, which included interviews with 1800 patients, showed the average annual cost per person with psychosis was $77,000, of which $41,000 was in lost productivity.
Health sector costs totalled $1.4 billion, of which 46% were accounted for by in-patient care, averaging nearly $10,000 per person.
People with psychosis spent over $1 million per annum on alternative medicine, around 60% of which was on alternative practitioners and the remainder on supplements.
