Psychosis linked to cancer
Risk of lung cancer was highest, followed by colorectal cancer. Women with either schizophrenia or bipolar disorder were also more likely to develop breast cancer.
Cancer was slightly more likely to develop among patients with schizophrenia than in those with bipolar disorder.
The authors say high rates of smoking likely contribute to lung cancer incidence among patients with severe mental illness.
Other lifestyle factors may also be at play in colon cancer patients.
