The quest for building muscles can lead to ‘manorexia’

The psychological disorder, dubbed ‘manorexia’, develops when bodybuilders become determined to become more muscular despite many exhibiting more muscles than average, they said.

The survey of 116 weightlifters showed that those likely to exhibit muscle dysmorphia tended to be young men and those who used supplements.

Lead researcher Johanna Nieuwoudt, an honours student at Southern Cross University, said the condition could lead to physical and mental harms, particularly if combined with steroid abuse.
