Quinoa safe for patients with coeliac disease

Although quinoa is gluten-free, in-vitro studies have suggested the grain may stimulate immune responses in people with coeliac disease and several cases of allergic reactions in non-coeliac patients have been reported.

A gastroenterologist from King’s College, London, assessed daily consumption of 50g of quinoa over six weeks among 19 adult patients with coeliac disease who were following a gluten-free diet.
