Rate of severe myocardial infarction quadruples
A retrospective analysis of nearly 14,000 hospital records found hospital admissions for STEMI over the period rose from 3.7 per 100,000 to 15.8 per 100,000 nationally.
The authors noted that some therapies, including beta-blockers and ACE inhibitors, remain underused in China.
The study could not ascertain whether there had been a true increase in STEMI or whether the numbers reflected improved access to hospital, but the authors noted cardiovascular risk factors rose in the same period.
