Real toll from swine flu higher than original count

Modelling by an international collaborative group funded by WHO suggested the pandemic caused more than 200,000 respiratory deaths, whereas the previously recognised count, based on laboratory-confirmed reports, was fewer than 20,000.

The modelling was based on weekly virology data from WHO and mortality data from 21 countries. It showed a 20-fold higher mortality rate in the Americas compared to Australia, New Zealand and most of Europe.

The researchers said when cardiovascular deaths linked to the swine flu pandemic were factored in, the global
