Rectal cancer patients not getting best treatment

Only around half of rectal cancer patients get guideline-recommended treatment, according to new research from South Australia.

The study, which used data linkage to capture virtually all SA patients treated for colorectal cancer from 2003 to 2008, found that 83% of colon and 56% of rectal cancer patients get best treatment according to NHMRC and international guidelines.

Many patients were missing out on adjuvant and neo-adjuvant chemo- and radiotherapy, the authors from Adelaide and Flinders Universities found.
