Red wine compound fails in NAFLD

Resveratrol, a compound found largely in the skins of red grapes, does not benefit patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) even at high doses, Australian investigators find.

Their trial randomised 20 overweight or obese men with NAFLD to either 3000mg resveratrol or placebo daily for eight weeks.

The compound did not reduce insulin resistance, steatosis or abdominal fat distribution compared with placebo, the authors led by Veronique Chachay of the University of Queensland Diamante Institute found.
