Refugee advocates cite Australian experience

In a letter to the Canadian Medical Association Journal doctors expressed concern about Bill C-31, which will permit separating children younger than 16 from their parents or holding them in a detention centre with their mothers as well as automatically detaining refugee claimants as young as 16 years in high-security prisons.

The authors cite Australian research showing more than 1100 incidents of self-harm and six suicides in a population of 6000 detained asylum-seekers in 2010–11.
