Regard torn menisci as ‘normal’ in the over-50s, conference told

An international expert in meniscal tears says they are so common in the over 50s they should be regarded as normal with no need for arthroscopy to remove torn tissue.

Martin Englund, professor of clinical epidemiology and orthopaedics at Lund University, Sweden, (pictured), told delegates at the Australian Rheumatology Association’s annual scientific meeting that doctors shouldn’t assume that a torn meniscus would necessarily be painful.
