Regular bone checks not needed for bisphosphonate holidays

It’s not often you get an evidence based decision to do less, but according to a study out this week women on a bisphosphonate ‘holiday’ may not need regular bone scans.

The Fracture Intervention Trial Long-term Extension (FLEX) study found that frequent short-term BMD scans did not improve fracture risk prediction in postmenopausal women taking a break from alendronate therapy.

Instead, age and hip bone mineral density at the time of discontinuation strongly predicted fractures
