Research shows a range of cancers linked to gallstones

Researchers included data from 17 cancer registries covering about a quarter of the US population (majority white) in a case-control study.

They found gallstones doubled the risk of liver cancer, and gallstones and cholecystectomy increased the risk of noncardia gastric cancer by 21% and 26% respectively, small-intestine carcinoid by 27% and 78% respectively and pancreatic cancer by 24% and 23% respectively.

Cancer risk may be increased due to inflammation and exposure to bile, the authors said.
