Resurgence of polio threat in africa, experts warn
IN THEIR latest update, World Health Organization and US Centers for Disease Control researchers classified 15 of 33 African countries at high risk of a wild poliovirus outbreak based on childhood immunisation rates and proximity to countries with active transmission.
Since 2001, outbreaks have occurred in 31 formerly polio-free countries in Africa, with the majority originating in Nigeria where the disease is endemic.
There are currently two ongoing outbreaks in Africa involving multiple countries and totalling more than 230 cases since 2013, the experts reported.
