Retinopathy risk highest with early onset T2DM

ONSET of type 2 diabetes in young adulthood is associated with a greater risk of developing the complication of retinopathy, NSW researchers say.

A study of 4000 patients shows those with type 2 diabetes onset between the ages of 15 and 30 were nearly five times more likely to develop retinopathy 10-15 years after diagnosis compared with those diagnosed after age 60.

The findings add to the evidence for early onset disease being particularly aggressive, say the researchers,
