Review backs clozapine in schizophrenia

Clozapine is effective for treatment-refractory schizophrenia, but patients need careful monitoring for adverse  effects, according to research presented at RANZCP 2015 in Brisbane.

The systematic review of 21 studies shows it improves function in patients more effectively than other antipsychotics such as olanzapine.

But the results are best for the first three months of treatment, with clozapine appearing less effective
