Review pinpoints best treatment for menstrual migraine

Triptans have the best evidential track record for the treatment and prevention of acute menstrual migraine, say US researchers.

Their systematic review of 36 randomised and open label trials looked at a range of treatments including not only triptans but also oral contraceptives, prostaglandin synthesis inhibitors, NSAIDs, phytoestrogens, gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists, dopamine agonists and various non-pharmacological therapies.
