Rheumatoid arthritis patients at risk of VTE

Swedish researchers analysed almost 38,000 medical records of people who had prevalent rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and almost 8000 people with incident RA and matched these groups to comparison groups in the general population with follow-up from 1997 through to 2010.

Of the patients with prevalent rheumatoid arthritis 2.2% had a VTE, compared to 1.1% of the general population.

Patients diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis are at an increased risk of VTE for the first year of diagnosis, and that risk remains stable for a decade, researchers said.
