Risk tools improve cancer diagnosis

These tools, developed from studies in general practice, calculate the risk that symptoms may result from cancer.

Tools for lung and colorectal cancer were tested by 614 GPs from 165 practices on symptomatic patients older than 40.

Over six months there were 1433 colorectal risk assessments and 1160 assessments for lung symptoms. It was then up to the GPs to decide who to refer.
