Schizophrenia linked to liver cancer
People diagnosed with schizophrenia have double the risk of developing hepatocellular cancer, an intriguing Taiwanese study has found.
Presented at APASL 2014 last week, the study involved over 2,300 men with a schizophrenia diagnosis and 9,400 controls followed up over 12 years.
Incidence of HCC in the schizophrenia group was 9.97 per 10,000 person years compared with 5.11 in the control group.
Schizophrenic patients with cirrhosis and hepatitis B were around 20 times more likely to develop HCC compared with non-schizophrenic patients with the same conditions, the study found.
