Scientists call for more action against polio

The Scientific Declaration on Polio Eradication attracted 400 signatories from 80 countries, including several eminent Australian researchers, who called for increased efforts and a change in ‘political will’ to combat the disease.

The world faced a window of opportunity, they said, with only 223 new cases due to wild virus recorded in 2012 and not a single case in India, considered one of the most difficult places to achieve eradication.

However, polio remained endemic in Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan.
