Malignant tissue behaves chaotically both in its occurrence and growth. Because of this, melanomas will frequently ‘break the pattern’ when seen in the context of surrounding skin. This may mean they are the only lesion in the anatomical area, or either larger or smaller, or of a different colour, to other lesions in the area.

As melanomas grow continuously, they will become larger than surrounding lesions, and this may be the only non-dermatoscopic clue.
