Sensitivity to gluten in kids questioned

The study, comparing 15 children with gluten sensitivity, 15 with coeliac disease and 15 controls with a functional gastrointestinal disorder, showed 80% of children with gluten sensitivity experienced abdominal pain and 66% were positive for antigliadin antibodies. Those with gluten sensitivity had normal to mildly inflamed mucosa.

Gastroenterologist Dr Evan Newnham, of Melbourne’s Box Hill Hospital, said the children were challenged with gluten-containing food rather than gluten alone, which could contribute to gastric symptoms. He said the evidence suggested gluten sensitivity
