SCIENCE progresses by testing theory against reality, but some incorrect ideas persist despite extensive evidence to the contrary. One such belief is that so-called ‘dysplastic’ naevi are precursors of melanoma.
While there is an increased incidence for melanoma in patients who have large (>20cm diameter) congenital naevi, there is no evidence that any other type of naevus is a melanoma
