Serum urate found to predict progression in OA
An intriguing study suggests an underlying driver to two seemingly disparate joint diseases: gout and osteoarthritis.
Researchers from New York University School of Medicine have found levels of serum urate, the crystallised form of which causes gout, can also predict osteoarthritis progression in people with knee OA.
The study adds to several other pieces of the puzzle connecting gout and OA. Previous research has shown that gout patients are considerably more likely to develop OA and that gout flares are more likely to occur in joints already affected by OA.
