The diagnosis of type 2 diabetes in a seven-year-old Aboriginal girl living in central Australia has shocked a leading endocrinologist.

The case has left Associate Professor Neale Cohen looking to the emerging world of epigenetics for answers as to why the disease has reached alarming rates in young people living in poverty-stricken communities, ill-equipped to manage the disease and its complications.
