Sexual health and the heart

Erectile dysfunction (ED) affects one in five men from 40 years of age and two in three men older than 70 years.

There is emerging evidence suggesting ED is an under-recognised early warning sign of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in both healthy men and in men with diabetes.

A man presenting with erectile problems provides an opportunity for a GP to initiate a cardiovascular risk assessment, in both younger and older men, with potential for CVD prevention.
