Shorter course of steroids effective in COPD exacerbations

In a study of 314 patients presenting with exacerbations to five different hospitals in Switzerland, researchers found a five-day course of prednisone 40mg/day was non-inferior to a 14-day course. There were no differences between the groups in recovery of lung function, the time to re-exacerbation or death.

“These findings will enable clinicians to minimise steroid exposure and reduce the risk of steroid-related toxicity in these patients,” experts said in an editorial accompanying the publication.
