Skin eruption presented like an SCC

You would be forgiven for thinking this was a form of skin cancer. However, this is a young woman with little in the way of solar damage elsewhere on the face. The biopsy was reported as compatible with an irritated, well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma but the biopsy had been a bit superficial. In fact, this was discoid lupus erythematosus presenting as a solitary lesion on sun-exposed skin.

On lifting the scale the underlying intrafollicular extensions came out, giving it the classic appearance of a carpet tack. The lesion melted away with sunscreen and
