AUSTRALIANS seeking a tan by using sunbeds are risking dangerously high levels of UV radiation, a study of emissions in solaria has found.

The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) found in a study of 20 Sydney and Melbourne solaria that only one had emissions of low intensity – UV Index 12, which is typical of mid-latitude summer sunlight and the upper limit in the European Community.

Most solaria had emissions above UV Index 20, and three had levels above the Australian and New Zealand standard’s upper limit of UV
