Sleep apnoea not cured with bariatric surgery

Study author Associate Professor John Dixon, head of obesity research at Monash University, urged GPs to monitor patients for OSA following bariatric procedures.

“Most of them [the patients] think they are cured and stop their therapy… but most of them still need their CPAP therapy afterwards,” he told MO.

Professor Dixon and his team conducted a randomised controlled trial of 60 obese patients with OSA with half being put on a conventional weight loss program including a low calorie diet while the other half had laparoscopic gastric banding.
