Smoked salmon exposed millions to infection risk

SALMON was a rare cause of food-borne outbreaks of salmonellosis but was identified as the culprit of the 2012 outbreak, based on epidemiological case-control analyses, food investigation and microbiological confirmation.

In total, there were 1149 cases of laboratory-confirmed salmonellosis between August and December 2012, which included four elderly people who died.

An estimated 4–6 million Dutch residents were possibly exposed to the contaminated salmon, researchers said, with 23,000 suffering acute gastroenteritis.
