Smoking link to risk of diabetes in offspring

THE data on 35,000 women from the Nurses’ Health Study II showed that smoking in the first trimester increased the risk of diabetes in daughters by 34%, independent of later life BMI.

Continued smoking in pregnancy and paternal smoking were also associated with increased risk of diabetes in daughters but this was attenuated by current BMI.

The increased risks were associated with shared lifestyle, not perinatal, factors.
