Something in the water
LEPTOSPIRA are a lurking freshwater hazard unheard of by many travellers.
High performance athletes doing risky things seem to be invulnerable.
In September 2000 the world was amazed when more than 40% of the 304 participants in the Borneo Eco-Challenge developed leptospirosis.
The Eco-Challenge was a demanding 10-day event involving trekking in jungle, swimming, kayaking, caving, climbing and mountain-biking.
No one died, but 29 participants were hospitalised.
