Spearmint allergy could be culprit in persistent oral lichen planus

Among a group of patients with OLP who tested positive to spearmint, most had been exposed to the essential oil in toothpaste, mouthwash or dental floss and some also reported consuming spearmint-flavoured chewing gum or after-dinner mints.

Although rare, spearmint allergy was probably under-recognised, the researchers said, advising patch testing in patients with OLP who don’t respond to treatment.

Among 14 cases examined recently, 10 had 80% improvement just by avoiding spearmint.
