Spike in hip replacements

The number of total hip replacement operations carried out in Victoria rose by a third from 1998 to 2009, a Melbourne study has found.

Data from over 45,000 patients showed the lifetime risk of hip replacement for a woman in her twenties rose from 8.5% to 10.3%.

The risk for men in the same age bracket had not risen not as sharply but ended up around the same, the authors from the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the University of Melbourne said.
