Sri Lanka may soon achieve elimination of malaria

MEETING in Colombo recently, the group, which includes representatives of Australia’s Foreign Affairs Department, the World Health Organization and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, urged Sri Lanka to maintain vigilance and resources in its fight against malaria transmission.

In the late 1960s, the country had half a million cases, but this was reduced to about 100,000 by 2000.

No transmission has occurred within Sri Lanka since October 2012 but imported cases were still a threat, the Malaria Elimination Group said in a statement.
