Stark gender difference in sports-related deaths

Researchers drew on data from regions in France covering a total 35 million inhabitants, finding 775 sports-related sudden death cases between 2005 and 2010.

Only 5% of fatalities were in women, putting the average incidence rate at 0.51 per million female sports participants compared to 10 per million males.

Among men the incidence significantly increased with age and varied depending on sport (low for swimming compared to cycling and jogging) but this did not apply to women, the researchers found.
