Statins up diabetes risk

The study replicates previous data showing a link between statins and new onset diabetes, which necessitated a US Food and Drug Administration change to statin labels in 2012 warning of a small increased risk of diabetes.

The reanalysis of the Nateglinide and Valsartan in Impaired Glucose Tolerance Outcomes Research (NAVIGATOR) trial looked at new onset diabetes over five years in around 25,000 patients, treatment-naïve to either β blockers, diuretics, statins and calcium channel blockers. 

It showed that patients starting statins had a 32% increased risk of new onset diabetes and patients starting diuretics had a 23% increased risk of new onset diabetes, compared with patients who did not start these treatments.
