Steroids raise risk in diabetes patients

The study in 18,000 patients with diabetes from the Australian Department of Veterans’ Affairs database showed 5.9% had comorbid COPD, of whom 67% were prescribed CS.

Patients who received a WHO-defined total daily dose of CS greater than or equal to 0.83/day had a 94% increased risk of hospitalisation for diabetes-related complications than those who did not take CS.

Lesser daily doses of CS were not associated with an increased risk of diabetes complications.
