Stroke patients face higher mortality risk if discharged on a weekend

Study reviewed outcomes for more than 30,000 patients with stroke and TIA

Patients with stroke or TIA who are discharged from Australian hospitals on a weekend face a higher mortality risk than those who leave hospital during the week, a study shows.

Hospital discharge

Stroke care received by patients discharged on weekends was less likely to involve evidence-based clinical processes, say the researchers from the Australian Stroke Clinical Registry (AuSCR) Consortium.

The new study compared AuSCR data on quality of care and outcomes for 30,600 patients with stroke and TIA across 45 Australian hospitals
