Study highlights metformin disparity

Metformin prescribing guidelines may need a review, says a researcher who has found a lack of consistency in doses for patients at various degrees of renal function.

Survey responses from 115 Australian endocrinologists and endocrine advanced trainees show all would use the medication in patients with type 2 diabetes. However, usage varies according to renal function.

The respondents reported a mean maximal dose of 1,991mg of extended-release metformin in patients with an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) of > 90mL/min/1.73sqm. Their dosage
