Study points to alcohol link in MS

People with a hospital admission for alcohol abuse may have a higher risk of developing multiple sclerosis, according to UK research.

Published in JAMA Neurology, the study looked at 500,000 people – around two-thirds men – with a record of day-case care or inpatient admission for alcohol use, abuse or dependence.

Compared with a reference cohort of 6.7 million inpatient admissions for other reasons, these patients were significantly more likely to have a subsequent MS-related hospital admission.
