Study reignites debate on value of SMBG in type 2 diabetes

The ongoing debate about the value of self monitoring blood glucose (SMBG) in patients with type 2 diabetes has reared its head once again, with more research finding it makes no difference to glycaemic control.

Published in this week’s Diabetologia the study of almost 300 type 2 diabetes patients on conventional insulin treatment found patients given weekly SMBG readings or HbA1c results showed no improvement in glycaemic control.
