Study sheds light on sudden death in epilepsy

Major changes in heart function during epileptic seizures could partly explain the phenomenon of Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP), say Australian researchers.

Their study looked at heart function in epileptic rats as measured by ECG and expression of hyperpolarization activated cyclic nucleotide-gated (HCN) channel proteins, which play a key role in regulating heart rhythm.
